'You're a High School Typing Teacher.'

by JoeDubin
'A high school footballer desperate for a scholarship and his headstrong coach clash in a dying Pennsylvania steel town.'

That is the synopsis for one of, if not the best, sports movie of all time.  All The Right Moves starring that crazy Tom Cruise.  ( I don't care if he is nuts, I love his movies.)  Tomorrow around the country, it is National Signing Day for high school football players.  They will put their pen to paper and make a huge, I mean huge decision, about where they will spend the next 4 or 5 years or their lives, if all goes well.

I have friends who coach college football and tomorrow is just as important to them as is every Saturday in the fall.  Alumni, boosters, fans and many others are paying close attention to what is going on tomorrow.  In fact, because recruiting is so popular, there are several websites dedicated to just recruiting.  It is big business.  Huge business.

In the movie, nutball Cruise plays Stefan Djordevic, a high school football player trying to get to the next level.  Now to sit here and tell you how great this movie is both a disservice to you and the movie.  It is that good and shows you the pressure, in a small way, of recruiting and decisions that are made.  The pivotal scene is between crazy Cruise and Craig T. Nelson, who plays Coach Nickerson.

Cruise:  'Scholarship here, no scholarship here. Who the hell gave you that power?
You're not God, Nickerson. You're just a typing teacher!'

Boom!

Best scene of the movie and once you see it, you will understand.  For those who have seen it, know how important that scene is.  For us who went through the rigors of recruiting, will understand it all too well.

So chill if your favorite recruit doesn't end up at your school.  Both Quarterbacks in the Super Bowl on Sunday, not a lot of teams wanted them.

Look at what they did.

Big Joe
